Wearing masks sets the stage for beautiful eye looks

This summer, all eyes are on the eyes — literally. With masks a necessity whenever we’re out and about, eyes are about the only thing people can see of our face, That means we have the opportunity to show off, share some creative self-expression, and — dare I say it — even have a little fun. So here are five current trend-based ideas for showing off those peepers in the biggest way possible this summer.

No. 1: Brighten Up. Neons were huge on runways for Spring 2020. At the Oscar de la Renta shows, models were sent out in everything from full-length formal gowns to casual wear, donning big-color eye makeup. Ditto at the Christian Siriano shows, where contrasting shadow hues like yellow and purple came in all shapes. So while I’ll never be one to turn away from earthy tones to create a classic smoky eye — like the Charlotte Darling Easy Eye Palette ($57 on charlottetilbury.com) — maybe this is a great time to order one of the new and daring takes on color. One of the best examples out there is Dior’s Happy 2020 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette ($63 on nordstrom.com).

No. 2: Go with the Faux. Are lashes ever not a thing? They’re always one of the biggest visual impacts you can have. But that’s especially true when your eyes are the only part of your face that anyone can see. So ramp it up with classic-and-feathery falsies like those from Huda Beauty ($18 on sephora.com), or get funky and bold with high-voltage colored lashes like the Color Impact Demi Wispies ($3 on ardellshop.com) that you can use here and there among your real lashes. This is hands-down one of the biggest eye-beauty trends of 2020.

No. 3: Spark Up the Sparkle. Other than New Year’s Eve, no other time demands a shimmer more than summertime. So don’t give it a second thought. The Spring 2020 catwalks were full of sparkle — a la Gigi Hadid at the Off-White show, with glitter splashed on her face. For that type of effect I love Tarte’s Treasure Pot Glitter Gel ($15 on tarte.com), since it’s a cinch to swipe across brows, and is made without parabens or phthalates.

No. 4: Artful Liner. Of course we all love a good cat eye. But this summer’s shapes and nods to mod take everything to a new level. Shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles and circles float around the eye with colorful liquid liners that hold their places — and provide all kinds of visual coolness. If you already own a terrific neutral liquid pencil, start drawing right away. And then add new shades like green and cerulean blue with Lancome’s Grandiose Liner ($16 on lancome-usa.com).

No. 5: Take a Brow. For a few years there, it looked like ultra-dark, bushy brows were going to dominate forever. Now? Not so much. But great definition and face framing is still the name of the game. Right now it’s about a natural textural appearance balanced with a color one to two shades darker than your natural one. Benefit’s Brow Styler Eyebrow Pencil & Powder Duo ($34 on benefitcosmetics.com) comes with both pencil and powder that come in 12 exacting shades. The end result: gorgeous punctuation to the rest of your look that catches, well, everyone’s eye.
