U.S. Patent Expert: Legal Battles Loom for Cannabis Industry

How can someone a patent a living substance that grows in the wild and has been known for about 5,000 years?

Professor Craig Nard says private companies are quietly securing federal patents on all manner of -based products, even though remains illegal at the federal level. An even richer irony is that the government itself has patented a method of “administering a therapeutically effective amount of a cannabinoids.”

How do they do it? It goes back to a 1980 landmark Supreme Court decision.
