U.S. Patent Expert: Legal Battles Loom for Cannabis Industry

How can someone a patent a living substance that grows in the wild and has been known for about 5,000 years?

Professor Craig Nard says private companies are quietly securing federal patents on all manner of cannabis-based products, even though marijuana remains illegal at the federal level. An even richer irony is that the government itself has patented a method of “administering a therapeutically effective amount of a cannabinoids.”

How do they do it? It goes back to a 1980 landmark Supreme Court decision.
