  • Women Lead the Way at Canadian Cannabis-Testing Facility

    It has been said that Canada’s burgeoning cannabis industry is largely dominated by men, so when the Georgia Straight learned about a cannabis-testing lab run by a team of women, the publication sent a reporter to check it out.

    At Northern Vine Labs in Langley, British Columbia, resident scientists Katherine Maloney, Claire Maloney (the two are cousins), and Jaclyn Thomson work in sync to offer quality-control testing of cannabis and cannabis products to licensed producers and registered medical patients. 

    During an interview with the four women at the lab, McCarthy says that although there wasn’t a directive to hire women exclusively, Northern Vine simply acquired the best people for the job.

  • Mom Begs Doctors to Give Severely Epileptic Daughter Cannabis Oil

    A desperate mother in Preston, England, has begged doctors to give her 2-year-old daughter cannabis.

    Jenna Heary hopes that the drug could help cure little Olivia's epileptic seizures, according to The Sun. 

    She hopes to get her daughter onto a trial in the hope that it might make her "just that little bit more comfortable", she added that if the drug reduced her seizures it "would be a real bonus."

    The tot currently suffers with over 100 seizures everyday, is on six different medications and follows a Ketogenic diet to try and control them – but it's not helping.

  • Australia Aims to Be World’s Top Medicinal Cannabis Supplier

    Australia’s budding medicinal cannabis sector is set for a major windfall after winning approval to begin exports.

    The health minister, Greg Hunt, said allowing medicinal cannabis product exports will help the developing domestic market to grow.

    “By helping the domestic manufacturers to expand, this, in turn, helps to ensure an ongoing supply of medicinal cannabis products here in Australia,” Hunt said in a statement.

    Gino Kenny thinks Ireland could legalize cannabis for recreational use within the next few years, saying it is a debate that "needs to happen."

    But the People Before Profit TD also said he is focusing on ensuring that his bill which would regulate cannabis for medicinal use gets over the line first, according to Dublin Live.

    Deputy Kenny was speaking to Dublin Live after Minister for Health Simon Harris granted a licence to Ava Barry last week that will allow her to use the drug to alleviate symptoms of Dravet syndrome, a form of epilepsy.

  • Canadian Pot Producer to Hold Job Fair to Keep Up With Demand

    With legal recreational sales of marijuana right around the corner, one of the companies that will supply New Brunswickers with cannabis is looking for new workers to meet the demand.

    Last week, Finance Minister Cathy Rogers laid out the first steps that will see a new Crown corporation oversee recreational sales in the province. The provincial government still hasn’t provided details on a retail model or where these stores will go, according to CBC News.

    But Organigram and Canopy Growth have secured a deal to supply at least nine million grams of cannabis a year for sale in the province.

    New Data Reveals Average Cost of Marijuana in Canada

    With all the controversy surrounding the legalization of marijuana across Canada and the uncertainty of just how much it’ll cost 4/20 friendly Canadians, weed is definitely on the brain. Just yesterday the Ontario government gave an estimate on just how much they might be selling legal marijuana for and many were not happy. There defense for the price suggested was that it met the black market average.

    However, what exactly is the average cost of marijuana across Canada really? How much is each province paying? Well one reddit user posted a graph of the average marijuana prices of 1 gram in each Canadian province and the territories as a whole. The averages are according to the calculations taken by the Parliamentary Budget Office of Canada from 2015-2016.

    The national average for one gram of weed in Canada is priced at $8.32.

    Canadian College First to Put Cannabis on Curriculum

    A southern Ontario college says it will be the first to offer a post-secondary credential in the production of commercial cannabis, according to CBC News.

    Niagara College says the graduate certificate program will launch in the fall of 2018 and aims to prepare students to work in the licensed production of cannabis, which includes marijuana, hemp fibre and hemp seed.

    The college’s president, Dan Patterson, says the program is meant to address a growing labour market need in the wake of legislative changes in Canada and abroad.

    ‘Mum, Cannabis and Me’: A Moving Documentary Debuts in New Zealand

    A medical student is set to add new perspective to the medicinal cannabis debate in New Zealand by sharing her terminally ill mother’s “heart-breaking” secret use of it in a new documentary. The 30-minute film “Mum, Cannabis and Me” premieres tonight in Wellington.

    It is narrated by fifth year medical student Victoria Catherwood, who hopes the film will inspire fresh conversations about medical marijuana — a hot topic after cannabidiol (CBD) was removed from the Misuse of Drugs Act in New Zealand yesterday.

    “We hope to bring this discussion into the public domain to kind of let doctors feel less stigmatized about talking about it, and also to let patients have these doctors informed so that all these unnecessary harms can be minimized and any benefits can possibly be utilized.”

    Catherwood’s mother is terminally ill with breast cancer.
