How Much Does an ‘Office of Cannabis’ Director Earn? More Than $200K

San Francisco plans to hire the director of the new Office of Cannabis at a salary of more than $200,000 next month after the Board of Supervisors approved its creation Tuesday.
The Office of Cannabis, which will come under City Administrator Naomi Kelly, will decide who receives operating permits, both recreational retailers and medical dispensaries — while all marijuana business will still need to go through other city departments for approval.
The Office of Cannabis was included as part of Mayor Ed Lee’s $10.1 billion budget proposal, which the board also approved Tuesday, and was part of separate legislation by mayoral appointee Supervisor Jeff Sheehy that was also approved.

Cannabis Comes to the County Fair

California Gov. Jerry Brown last week signed a bill that details how to carry out the November 2016 ballot measure that legalizes recreational marijuana as of January 2018. Tucked deep in the text is an option for county fairs to allow sampling and sales for people 21 and older in designated spots.
The media has had fun with the image of marijuana users getting the munchies and exploring the enticing array of fair food. The Fresno Bee last week imagined “a dramatic increase in funnel cake sales at county fairs across the state.”

Companies ready to grab a big piece of California’s recreational cannabis market
Now Gocobachi and her co-founder are working on expanding their 400-square-foot kitchen. But they’re postponing leasing a new space because San Francisco’s marijuana regulations are still in flux and it’s unclear where the city will let them set up shop.

That’s the type of uncertainty everyone in the marijuana industry faces as city and state officials figure out how to regulate both the medical and recreational marijuana industry. For now, California’s edibles companies only sell to patients with a doctor’s recommendation. But the market is expected to balloon further when regulators set up the state’s recreational use framework — which could be as early as next year. And edibles makers expect to face extra scrutiny over how they prepare their products so they’re safe to eat, and package them so they aren’t appealing to children.

Marketing, Business, and Retail Opportunities
Explosive growth of the cannabis industry means employers are looking to hire candidates skilled in Marketing, Business Management, and Retail.
California’s Department of Consumer Affairs’ Bureau of Medical Cannabis Regulation plans to hire 50 to 75 people starting July 1, 2017. California’s Department of Food and Agriculture and Department of Public Health have similar needs for skilled candidates to support this growing industry.
In the private sector, growers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of cannabis need skilled candidates to help create their brands, grow their business, and reach new customers in social media and across the web.
Traditional outlets like AdWeek, Forbes, and The Atlantic are speaking to the huge opportunities in the cannabis industry.
